Tortuguero

Tortuguero

Tortuguero is a village in Limón Province, on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. Part of Tortuguero National Park, it’s on a rainforest-covered sandbar whose beaches are a major nesting site for green turtles. It was the wrong time of year to see turtle activity but there were plenty of other things to see along the park’s freshwater canals. All trips out were made by boat as there are no roads. Plenty of torrential downpours though.
I stayed in an individual cabin at Evergreen Lodge. They're all on stilts along raised walkways because of the amount of rain. The numerous frogs were in great voice day and night, and the Howler monkeys made sure everyone was awake at dawn.
