I loved the privately owned 130 hectares reserve of Amagusa. It was an early blue-sky kinda day, full of excitement and anticipation. The scenery we passed on the way was spectacular in the dawn sunshine.

The Basantes familiy have been farming this area for 20 years; Sergio Basantes and his wife Doris now run it as a conservation reserve with enthusiasm, knowledge and delicious breakfasts!

Their garden attracts sought after Choco endemics like the Empress Brilliant, Velvet-purple Coronet, Violet-tailed Sylph, Brown Inca, Purple-bibbed White-tip, and White-whiskered Hermit as well as the Glistening-green Tanager and Black-chinned Mountain Tanager. I managed to photograph a wonderful Indigo Flowerpiercer, Rose-faced Parrots, an Orange-breasted Fruiteater, and a Moss-backed Tanager.
